EDITOR’S NOTE: The Port Townsend Police Department said it was unable to submit a police log for this week and will submit one next week.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office responded to a total of 351 calls for service from Jan. 10 through Jan. 17. Deputies conducted 166 traffic stops, of which seven resulted in criminal (misdemeanor/felony) charges.

Jan. 10: Deputies assisted Port Townsend Police with an armed car prowler. One person called 911 reporting the man had entered into their car without permission at around 2 a.m. Port Townsend Police arrived, and upon walking up to the vehicle, noticed the man was holding a pistol. Despite many attempts at hailing the man to come out of the vehicle and surrender himself peacefully, the man refused to comply with law enforcement. Additional units from Port Angeles Police and the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office were called in, along with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office armored vehicle, and negotiators from all agencies. After an hours-long standoff, the man was eventually convinced by the negotiation team to leave the gun in the car and surrender. The man panicked when he discovered that he could not physically open the doors to the vehicle. This was remedied after negotiators told him to try another door in the vehicle. The man was able to exit and was taken into custody without further incident.

Jan. 11: A caller in Chimacum reported around 5 p.m. that a strange man walked into their home, asking where he could purchase cowboy boots. The man, stated to be roughly in his 60s, roughly 6 feet tall, of large build with white hair, was reportedly wearing “a Santa hat and a red puffy jacket.” He was also reportedly acting “not all there.” A deputy arrived shortly after the caller reported this, and was unable to find the man. The caller told the deputy the man likely arrived in a vehicle, which explains his sudden appearance and disappearance.

Jan. 12: Deputies responded to a remote area in the mountains near Quilcene to a report of an unwanted person. Upon arrival, deputies were able to determine that the situation was a complex situation involving a poor housing arrangement. Deputies contacted the LEAD team and were able to make arrangements for two juveniles and their parent to get a safe place to stay for the night, and receive assistive services moving forward.

Jan. 13: A deputy responded to a traffic collision in the Jacob Miller area around 4 a.m., where a car struck a deer. The driver reported the collision in a 911 call and stated their vehicle may or may not be drivable as a result of the crash. The deputy arrived on scene and verified the driver was okay. No airbags deployed and the driver was uninjured. The deer was ultimately euthanized at the scene due to extensive injury.

Jan. 14: A caller in the Port Ludlow area called inquiring about what to do about drones flying over their property. The caller stated they did not want their neighbor flying drones over their property. A deputy with extensive knowledge and experience with unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) returned the phone call and explained the federal statutes regarding drones.

Jan, 15: A deputy responded to a report from the county’s solid waste facility that a patron was being verbally hostile and aggressive with staff at the dump. The man’s identity was provided by staff to the responding deputy. The deputy was able to track the man (whom was housesitting) down, and issued him a formal trespass admonishment banning him from the county dump. Please be kind to the staff at the dump and follow their directions.

Jan. 16: At around 6 p.m. on the Bogachiel River, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office deputies, along with Jefferson and Clallam Search and Rescue, and the U.S. Navy, were dispatched to an injured hiker. The hiker had fallen down an embankment and injured their head. The hiker was located by the inter-agency team and airlifted from the scene by a Navy helicopter at around 9 p.m.

Jan. 17: Deputies and Washington State Patrol responded to a collision at the Highway 104 and Center Road off-ramp at around 10 p.m. The single vehicle involved appeared to have taken the corner too fast, and ended up striking a dirt embankment. The driver was uninjured. The car needed to be towed, and the driver was provided a ride home by a deputy.
