ShakeOut Drill to be held this week

Jefferson County emergency responders are planning for the 2021 ShakeOut Drill.

The annual exercise is planned for 10:21 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 21, and county officials note that all hazard signs will sound at that time.

The drill is a chance to practice the “drop, cover and hold on” procedure for an earthquake.

In the event of a quake, officials note that residents should immediately drop to the ground and cover their neck and head with one arm. If possible, get under a sturdy table or other piece of furniture and hold on until the shaking stops and do not run outside.

People outdoors should move away from buildings, street lights, utility wires and trees. Anyone in a moving vehicle should stop as quickly and safely as possible and stay in the vehicle.

Officials with the Jefferson County Department of Emergency Management said those who participate in a ShakeOut Drill activity should take time for a walk through their home or office to survey each room for objects that could easily fall and cause injury, and people are more likely to react quickly when shaking begins if they have actually practiced protecting themselves on a regular basis.
