The East Jefferson Rivals boys and girls wrestling teams traveled to Port Angeles over the weekend to compete in the annual Battle of the Ax tournament with 12 other schools.
The boys placed 11th overall while the girls finished on the podium with a second-place spot on Saturday, Jan. 8.
The girls excelled at the Battle of the Ax, with four grapplers finishing in the top three for their weight classes, and one athlete ending in first place for her weight class.
Sophomore Mi Amada Lanphear-Ramirez won all three of her matches in the 118-pound weight class to earn the first-place spot and 18 team points for the EJ girls. She defeated two opponents by decision and one by fall.
Senior Savanna Hoffmann amassed 12 team points and second place in the 125-pound weight class, with three wins by fall and one loss.
Melody Douglas placed third in the 135-weight class, Indigo Casad came in third for the 157-weight class, and Lily Delgado placed fourth in the 120-weight class.
The boys team competed at the tournament against four teams from around the region. They were defeated 81-0 by Bremerton High in their first matchup, lost 63-4 against North Kitsap High, fell 60-18 versus Port Angeles High, and won 36-15 against Sequim High in their final matchup. The EJ boys went 1-3 overall and placed 11th in the tourney.
Both Rivals wrestling teams’ next matchups will be Wednesday, Jan. 12 for the only home meet of the season at Port Townsend High School.
Both teams are expecting to face grapplers from Olympic and Bainbridge high schools.
