The second inning of Quilcene’s fastpitch softball game saw a grand slam, 20 runs and hard hitters. The Rangers traveled to Muckleshoot Tribal School March 28 and defeated the Kings 25-1. “We played really well in this game,” said coach Mark Thompson. “We may be in the midst of a rebuilding project here, but we have players who are serious about getting better, and are serious about defending what is theirs." The Quilcene Rangers fastpitch program has held the league championship title since 2011. During the last game before students went on spring break, Natalie Coffey had a grand slam in the second inning, along with a “complete game one hitter” by Kayla Ward, a triple in the first inning and had six RBIs for the game. “Natalie has been a beast for us so far this year,” Thompson said. “Both on the offensive and defensive side of the ball, she has played really well." On the mound, Ward, in her first start of the season, struck out seven players and gave up zero-earned runs. "What can I say about Kayla? A year and a half ago she came up to me and said ‘I am going to be a pitcher,’” Thompson said. “Apparently she was serious about that because she is really starting to come into her own in the circle." Other highlights of the game include Brittney Beukes, batting one for two, accounting for four runs and had two RBIs; Madison Coffey batting two for two, had a triple run, and two RBIs; and Marissa Keiffer with two for three and had four RBIs. The Rangers are scheduled to travel to Evergreen Lutheran at 4 p.m. April 9. Their next home game is at 4 p.m. April 11 against Wishkah Valley.
