The city of Port Townsend’s Public Works Department was awarded “Main Street Champion” by the Port Townsend Main Street Program for the department’s efforts to build and improve public spaces around town.
PT Main Street hosted its yearly membership meeting and appreciation event on Thursday at the Tyler Street Plaza tent, recapping 2021 program highlights and giving out leadership and volunteer awards to recognize people who’ve shown outstanding support for the nonprofit.
Steve King, public works director for the city, accepted the “Main Street Champion” award at the event.
“Public Works contributed to many more ways we can enjoy public spaces in our community,” said Mari Mullen, executive director of PT Main Street.
“They have anchored the Tyler Plaza tent with 2,000-pound eco-blocks for the holidays; they skillfully moved giant planters and boulders for the new Adams Street parklet; they artfully placed 1,000-pound sculptures and trail signs in the Creative District; and they assisted with the Hidden History sign project. They are professional, capable, strong and positive,” she said.
PT Main Street board vice president Wendy Duede honored Sandy Spencer, the program’s outgoing board president, as “Volunteer of the Year” for her six years of dedicated work on the nonprofit’s board.
“Sandy has worked behind the scenes planning meetings, assisting with the budget during challenging times, working events, and sharing her wisdom from running successful retail businesses,” Duede said. “Lucky for us, Sandy will continue to be involved as past president and be part of our promotion committee.”
The “Extra Thanks” award was presented to volunteer Randy Rosens by Jan Carter, PT Main Street’s board secretary. This award is given to someone who goes the extra mile to support the Port Townsend Main Street Program in an unexpected way.
Rosens was successful at fundraising for the nonprofit at Concerts on the Dock this past summer, Carter said.
“Randy really knows how to work the crowd, and he had fun doing it at all five shows,” Carter noted.
Rosens was presented with a personalized T-shirt donated by Frank Luro of Port Townsend Shirt Company, along with other gifts from the board.
