PT Main Street plans virtual tree lighting, visit from Santa Claus

The Port Townsend Main Street Promotion Committee has launched its 2020 holiday program, with an extended Small Business Saturday that lasts throughout the following week.

Officials said that by extending Small Business Saturday over a week, it will be possible to have a safer, more socially distant event. Main Street is also encouraging merchants to offer curbside pickup and online shopping options.

And that’s not all that is different.

“There have been some changes to the holiday activities, due to recent COVID restrictions,” said Mari Mullen, the program’s executive director.

The Kiwanis Choo Choo will not be part of the December lineup and several prime parts of the celebration will be virtual this year.

The overall campaign, which will still include a visit from Santa himself, encourages customers to invest in the local economy by patronizing local businesses while also maintaining safe social distancing practices.

The promotion highlights local shopping, dining, and overnight stays.

Another tradition will remain in place: the decorated merchant windows that creatively reflect holiday spirit. Window displays will also feature the hidden “woodland creature” as part of the program’s new Winter Window Wander. There will also be an evolving window display in Port Townsend Plaza in December.

The program is lighting up Port Townsend through decorations. White lights will decorate the trees in the historic downtown, while illuminated snowflakes decorate Uptown. The winter lights campaign, which runs through February, is funded by the city of Port Townsend and participating property owners.

The community tree at Haller Fountain will be lighted Saturday, Dec. 5 and broadcast on Port Townsend Main Street Program’s Facebook page live.

Santa visits, managed via the Zoom videoconferencing platform, will be arranged Saturday, Dec. 19.

Families can also drop off letters to Santa at Whistlestop Toys’ Santa Mailbox (1005 Water St., in Port Townsend Plaza) and The Port Townsend Leader office’s Santa Mailbox (225 Adams St.).
