Port Townsend School District students to pay again for breakfast, lunch

Following the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s federal school lunch waiver being set to expire June 30, the Port Townsend School District will  go back to charging students for breakfast and lunch.

During the coronavirus pandemic, Congress enacted a federal waiver for kids to receive their daily meals for free in school, but the measure is set to expire June 30 unless extended by Congress.

The Port Townsend School District listed the new breakfast and lunch prices in its June 16 meeting.

Breakfast and lunch prices for Salish Coast Elementary, Blue Heron Middle, and Port Townsend High went up by 25 cents for breakfast and 50 cents for lunch when compared to food prices during the 2019-20 academic year, prior to the school lunch waiver in 2020.

For the 2022-23 academic year, Salish Coast students will be charged $2 for breakfast and $3.25 for lunch, while Blue Heron kids will be charged $2.25 for breakfast and $3.50 for lunch.

Port Townsend’s high schoolers will pay $2.25 for breakfast and $3.50 for lunch.

Milk will cost 50 cents at all three schools; the same as prior years.
