Port Townsend Police Log | Warming shelter assault

The Port Townsend Police Department received a total of 166 calls between Friday, Feb. 24, and Thursday, March 2. Below are selected reports.

At 8 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, an assault was reported in the 600 block of Water Street after a man attacked another man at a warming shelter. The victim was struck by the aggressor, who was wearing a tan coat with his hood up.

Officers contacted the victim, who confirmed he’d been assaulted but did not want to press charges. The aggressor was contacted as well, and law enforcement advised him not to contact the victim.

At 9 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, a theft occurred at the fairgrounds in the 3900 block of Landes Street. An unknown suspect broke into the nearby RV park’s pay station, stealing $60. The crime occurred between 9 p.m. and 8 a.m. No other damage was reported and there was no video surveillance in the area.

At 1:40 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, in the 1900 block of Blaine Street, a business was broken into. A passerby reported the crime to police. Officers searched the store, noting nothing in the building had been taken and the suspect entered the store via a plexiglass window.

At 9:20 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 26, a potential prowler was reported in the 2200 block of Towne Point Avenue by a resident.

The crime occurred a day prior at 5 a.m. while the resident was in her home reading. She observed someone shining a flashlight into her bedroom. The woman saw the silhouette of the potential prowler, who appeared to be around 5-foot-8 and wearing a beanie. There were no video cameras in the area and the woman was given crime prevention tips. Officers were advised to conduct extra patrols in the area.

At 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 26, in the 1900 block of Blaine Street, a homeless man was heard yelling at people. He was wearing a dark coat and camouflage pants, and yelled at someone using the dog park in the area. The man was yelling about his right to speak his mind and left the area before officers arrived.

At 2:20 p.m. Monday, Feb. 27, a theft was reported in the 1000 block of Lawrence Street after a box was stolen from a car at a nearby residence. The crime occurred a few days earlier, with the suspect taking a box with several gifts from inside the unlocked car.

At 6:15 p.m. Monday, Feb. 27, in the 600 block of Clay Street, an injured deer was reported. The creature was stuck on an iron fence, but wasn’t impaled. An officer freed the animal, but noticed one of its legs was broken. The deer was unable to move due to the break, and the officer dispatched it.
