The Port Townsend Police Department received 134 calls for service between Monday, Dec. 14 and Sunday, Dec. 20. Below are selected reports.

At 12:11 a.m. on Dec. 14, officers responded to reports of a theft at a business in the 400 block of Sims Way. An employee reported that a man had come into the store and taken at least one beer without paying. The man was described as 6-foot tall with blonde hair and was wrapped in a gray blanket.

Surveillance video showed the man selecting a beer and then hiding it under the blanket before exiting the store. Officers located the suspect enjoying his beverage at Kah Tai Lagoon Nature Park under a picnic shelter.

Officers made contact with the man who told them he had purchased the can at a different store. An officer who had reviewed the footage confirmed that the man was the person in the video. The man was arrested for second-degree burglary and third-degree theft. Officers noted that theft of alcohol is a recurring problem for the man.

At 8:22 a.m. on Dec. 14, a caller in the 300 block of Eighth Street reported a vehicle prowl. The caller told police that his work crew’s cargo trailer had been broken into. A lock had been broken off the trailer and tools were taken from within. Police estimate that about $1,000 worth of tools had been taken from the trailer.

At 10:30 a.m. on Dec. 14, a caller reported a fight in the 4900 block of Landes Street near the fairgrounds. Officers were alerted to multiple subjects involved and when police arrived at the scene, they found two men at the east side of fairgrounds near the race track.

At one point the two exchanged blows. Additional subjects at the scene quickly dispersed when officers arrived and appeared to only have been providing encouragement during the fight. The two men involved chose not to pursue a criminal case and characterized the situation as mutual combat related to the purchase of a tent and other associated items. Neither claimed injuries as a result of the altercation.

At 11:50 a.m. on Dec. 15, a business in the 1900 block of Blaine Street reported a burglary sometime between noon the day prior to the time of the call. Taken in the incident were six bicycle lights, two pedal kits and inner tubes, with a value of roughly $500. The victim said a complete inventory of the items stolen in the incident had not yet been done.

At 11:51 a.m. on Dec. 15, a caller in the 600 block of Water Street said she had been enjoying some ice cream with her family when an elderly man began yelling at her for not wearing a mask. The woman told a dispatcher that the man was “just being a putz.”

At 9:22 p.m. on Dec. 15, a caller at an apartment complex in the 600 block of Hancock Street reported a possible burglary attempt. The caller said someone had been running up and down the stairs of the complex, knocking on doors.

An officer arrived at the scene and found a woman who had apparently passed out after using heroin. Prior to losing consciousness, the woman had been kicking on doors in an attempt to get help. Items related to her heroin use were confiscated and the scene was turned over to medics.

At 9:23 p.m. on Dec. 15, an employee of a business in the 400 block of Sims Way reported a theft. The subject was identified and was known to officers from a similar incident just one day prior.

According to the caller, the man had taken a bottle of beer from the store without paying. Officers contacted the man and he admitted to taking the beer; video footage from inside the store clearly showed the theft. The man was arrested and booked for second-degree burglary and third-degree theft.

At 1:38 p.m. on Dec. 16, a bicycle was stolen from the front of the library in the 1200 block of Lawrence Street. The victim, an employee of the library, said the theft had occurred between 12:30 and 1:30 p.m. The bike was described as bright blue.

At 1:57 a.m. on Dec. 17, a criminal trespass was issued in the 2000 block of East Sims Way after a transient man was found sleeping in a breezeway on the property. The man had been issued an admonishment on Dec. 13, but due to a clerical error, he was issued another trespass admonishment instead of being arrested. The man told police that the owner had given him permission to stay on the property. Police said the claim was unfounded.

At 1:38 a.m. on Dec. 18, police were called to the intersection of Seventh Avenue and Hancock Street after receiving a report that a group of mailboxes had been damaged. An officer arrived and found what appeared to be damage from a vehicle backing up and knocking them over.

At 3:05 p.m. on Dec. 18, police were called to the 100 block of Taylor Street after a man entered an apartment where he didn’t live, took items from the entryway area and threw them into the water. Police were unable to locate the man and will issue a trespass notice if he is found. The victim was not interested in pursuing charges for the theft.

At 7:44 a.m. on Dec. 19, a caller in the 800 block of East Park Avenue reported that an unknown person had entered the business park and accessed a food truck at the site.

The owner of the truck believed he had locked it when he left, but upon returning, noticed the trailer had been accessed and speakers valued at $200 were stolen. Surveillance camera footage from nearby businesses is being examined by police.

At 1:55 p.m. on Dec. 19, a homeowner reported a hit-and-run had occurred sometime during the previous night. The caller told police that someone crashed into their mailbox in the 700 block of Cherry Street.

Tire tracks could clearly be seen leaving from the location of the mailbox through nearby bushes.
