Troopers with the Washington State Patrol responded to a single-vehicle crash on State Route 104 near the U.S. 101 interchange on Sept. 24.
At around 6:45 a.m., a 1995 Ford Ranger was traveling westbound when it left the roadway to the left, lost control and rolled, according to an agency memo.
The vehicle came to rest in a ditch along the westbound side of the highway. It was found totaled and abandoned at the scene.
Three days later, the body of the driver, identified as 43-year-old Curtis Denney of Port Angeles, was found nearly half a mile north of the collision, said Trooper Katherine Weatherwax, the public information officer for District 8.
“They even sent search and rescue with cadaver dogs, but did not search far enough North,” she said. “The driver was on the side of the highway on US 101/SR 104.”
As of Sept. 29, the incident remains under investigation.
It is unknown if drugs or alcohol were a factor, whether Denney was wearing a seatbelt, or if he was struck by another vehicle, Weatherwax said.
The official cause of death is pending an autopsy.
