Pool essential for health of community | Letter to the editor

We are three octogenarians who credit the three-day-a-week aqua aerobics class at the Mountain View Pool with helping us maintain good health well into our 80s.

The vigorous exercise and camaraderie of the aerobics class has supported us through two knee replacements, two hip replacements and one revision, and depression. We work out as hard as we can and we love every minute of it!

Because of the water exercise we are able to maintain an active lifestyle including regular brisk walking and socializing with friends, and we require few medical interventions. Fran’s doctor says that she is “the healthiest 85-year-old that comes into her clinic.”

Port Townsend and Jefferson County have an older population with 47 percent of residents being 60 years or older, according to the latest census.

Mountain View Pool, the only public pool in Jefferson County, is more than 60 years old and is at risk of failing at any time. A viable new accessible pool is an essential tool to help our community stay healthy and vibrant into the future.
