The East Jefferson boys varsity soccer team hit an offensive wall last week, falling scoreless in games against Kingston and Sequim.

On the road against the Buccaneers, EJ fell 5-0 to Kingston early last week.

Going into spring break East Jefferson had to play without several starters. With a reshuffled lineup the match started tentatively for both teams, with each side feeling each other out, according to EJ Coach Robert Cantley. 

Kingston took the lead after 10 minutes of play via a penalty kick following a clumsy foul. EJ Goalkeeper Haven McMillan got a hand to the ball but could not keep it out. 

EJ continued to apply pressure after the goal but couldn’t find the cutting edge and slipped to 2-0 shortly before the break.

A second-half comeback never materialized as EJ couldn’t get a grip on the game with several players operating in unfamiliar positions. Once again McMillan played diligently in goal but could not prevent a further three goals splitting the posts. 

Late last week on the road in Sequim, the Wolves kept their unbeaten streak alive by stopping EJ 3-0.

EJ defended well throughout against the league’s only undefeated team, only going behind by one goal late in the first half after a fine save from McMillan that was followed up by an alert Sequim forward line. 

The second half saw immense improvement from EJ with much more physical play as they sought to knock Sequim off its rhythm, Cantley noted.

Senior defender Yarrow Dean of East Jefferson led by example as sophomore Ashton Meyer-Bibbins completed the entire game at left back in his first full varsity match by proving to be fearless in defense. The Wolves went up by two through a penalty late in the second half and iced the scoring with a breakaway goal near the final whistle.
