Online workshop offers tips before opening day of crabbing seasion

A virtual workshop is planned this week to help crabbers get ready for the season.

The workshop is 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 30.

Want to learn more about crabbing in the Puget Sound?

Need advice on how to set up your gear so you can catch more crab?

The Jefferson County Marine Resources Committee and Northwest Straits Foundation are working on another year of crabber education. Each year an estimated 12,000 crab pots are lost in Puget Sound, and the Northwest Straits Foundation works to help crabbers learning how to prevent from adding to the problem.

According to the foundation, lost crab pots continue to capture crab with no one to harvest them, resulting in nearly 180,000 Dungeness crab lost each year.

The workshop will address how to properly set up crabbing gear and more. Questions are encouraged and will be answered live on the webinar.

Sign up for the workshop by registering online at www.nwstraitsfoundation.org or by clicking “Register For Webinar.”
