The close of October marks the launch of “Inspired by Art,” a book by “Olympic Peninsula Authors” reacting to artwork exhibited by the Blue Whole Gallery in Sequim, which includes submissions by four Port Townsend-area authors.
Port Townsend poets E.M. “Eva” Epstein, Marcia Limoges and Judy Rosen are joined by Diane Walker — poet, professional photographer and abstract painter who’s served on the board of the Port Ludlow Art League — among the roughly two dozen authors to react to the works of more than 40 artists, in a collaborative compilation of written and visual art, edited and designed by Olympic Peninsula Authors Heidi Hansen and Linda Myers.
The writers were originally inspired by the lack of representative organizations for their field in Clallam County and the surrounding area. The connection between the Olympic Peninsula Authors and the Blue Whole Gallery has been a means to foster a creative community, through which each party is able to make connections with prospective audiences they hadn’t reached previously.
“Inspired by Art” is the subject of a book launch party, open to the public, from 3-6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 30, at Blue Whole Gallery, on 129 W. Washington St. in Sequim, but Blue Whole Gallery President Jolene Sanborn noted that the book has already been the subject of six “ekphrastic” (narrative) events over the course of the past three years, as it was being assembled.
“The book has been quite the undertaking, coordinating those events, then corralling both authors and artists for photos and edited work,” Sanborn said. “The artists at Blue Whole Gallery have had a wonderful time during these events. It’s a lot of fun to hear how authors react to the works of art that we’ve created. They’ve done a great job with this book.”
Authors and artists will be on hand to sign copies of the book Oct. 30, and refreshments will be served.
