Navy to conduct ‘force protection exercise’

Posted

Northwest Navy bases will participate in an annual anti-terrorism force protection exercise next week called Exercise Citadel Shield-Solid Curtain 2022.

The training exercise will start Monday, Jan. 31 and continue through Friday, Feb. 11.

The Navy said it routinely conducts exercises such as Exercise Citadel Shield-Solid Curtain to ensure readiness, and noted that Navy policy prevents the discussion of the specifics of force protection. As such, the details of the annual exercise will not be released publicly.

Navy officials said measures will be taken to minimize disruptions within local communities and to normal base operations, but noted there may be times when the training creates increased traffic around bases or delays in base access due to temporary gate closures or other security-related activities.

Officials also noted that residents near Navy bases may also see or hear security and other first-responder activities associated with the exercise, including potentially seeing training smoke, hearing small explosive sounds, or emergency notification loudspeaker announcements. There may also be increased response vehicle or vessel activity on or near Navy installations.

The simulations are part of the training exercise, according to the Navy, and pose no safety risk.
