Naked and afraid: Roadside rendezvous leads to police chase

It’s probably a safe bet to say there won’t be a second date.

A 32-year-old Port Angeles man was arrested Saturday night for trying to elude police after he allegedly fled from sheriff’s deputies following a roadside tryst near Killapie Beach with a woman he met at a local casino.

The incident started after a deputy saw a suspicious vehicle headed along Shine Road just after 9:30 p.m. May 21.

The driver fled from the deputy, first turning onto Harbor View Place, and then back onto Shine Road, at times driving at excessive speeds with the headlights on the vehicle turned off.

Other deputies responded, and spike strips were placed at both ends of Shine Road.

As law enforcement officers searched for the driver, 911 dispatchers received a call from a woman in the Shine area who said she had been in a parked van with a man named Alex. They were about to have sex, she said, when law enforcement arrived and the man got scared.

The woman, 24, said she had met the man at the casino, and said he kicked her out of the van before she could collect her belongings. She also said he had put something in her body “to make her feel more high,” but was unsure what exactly it had been.

He was naked when he drove away, she added.

She described the man as in his 40s, about 6-foot-tall, thin but with a beer belly.

The woman wasn’t exactly sure of her location, but said she could see the water. She eventually used a light on her cell phone so deputies could find her by the side of the road.

On further thought, the woman told a deputy she wasn’t sure the man’s name was Alex, but it definitely started with an A. She also said she had lost her drugs in the man’s van.

Deputies found the minivan, a 2005 Honda Odyssey, abandoned.

The driver was later sighted crawling out of the brush near Highway 104 and was taken into custody.

He was booked into jail for eluding, no valid driver’s license, and and outstanding warrant for a domestic violence offense.
