Medication Education & Disposal Project (MED-Project) recently launched a statewide program to offer Washington residents free services to dispose of expired, unwanted, or unused medicine safely.

“This initiative is important for communities in the state, given that state legislation requires the collection of unwanted or expired medications,” said program spokeswoman Lili Kadets.

In addition to its existing programs, in several counties MED-Project has activated approximately 150 additional drop-off sites for Washington residents. In Jefferson County, drop-off sites include kiosks at the Port Townsend Police Department and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

MED-Project is also launching a public awareness campaign to notify residents about the program to safely dispose of their unwanted medicine. A mobile-friendly website (www.med-project.org) provides drop-off location information and instructions, as well as downloadable educational materials.

“We want to encourage Washington state residents to take their medication as prescribed, store it safely, and dispose of unwanted or expired medicine securely,” said Dr. Victoria Travis, MED-Project’s national program director. 

“Our drop-off locations and mail-back services make drug disposal easy, convenient and safe,” Travis noted.
