A man died and a younger male was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle on Dec. 20 after their car collided with the back of a school bus, according to East Jefferson Fire Rescue officials.
Four students were on the bus at the time of the collision but, along with the driver, sustained no injuries.
East Jefferson Fire Rescue crews responded at about 8:10 a.m. to the collision on Center Road south of Ole Torkelson Road.
The bus driver was heading north on Center Road toward Chimacum Elementary and reported that she felt the bus suddenly jolt as she slowed down to pick up a student, according to officials.
Responding crews found a white sedan that suffered significant front-end damage, as half of the vehicle was under the back of the bus.
The driver of the sedan was extricated but, despite efforts by crews, did not survive. The second passenger, a young male, was airlifted to Harborview.
The cause of the collision is under investigation by the Washington State Patrol.
