A 34-year-old Port Hadlock man was injured during an accidental shooting Jan. 2, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Joe Nole said 911 dispatchers were notified just after 10:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 2 that a man with a gunshot would was being treated at Jefferson Healthcare.

Nole said the man was handling a .22-caliber pocket revolver when he shot himself in the side of the abdomen.

“He thought it was unloaded,” Nole said.

The round hit the man on the left side of his body above his hip and came out the other side, Nole said.

After the shooting, the man went to tell his dad that he had shot himself and the father at first thought he was joking, Nole said.

The son then pointed out his wound, which was starting to bleed.

The handgun did not have a trigger guard, the protective loop that surrounds the trigger, Nole said.
