A 38-year-old Port Townsend man was charged with two counts of rape of a child and one count of child molestation March 22. The alleged victim told police that Nathaniel Caylor assaulted her three times between January 2018 and January 2019, said prosecutor Julian St. Marie. In 2015, Caylor received what is believed to be the largest settlement from the Seattle Police Department in history after he was shot in the jaw by police officer Eugene Schubeck in 2009. The Seattle Times reported that Caylor received $1.9 million in the settlement, and that he underwent 17 jaw surgeries after the incident. His son was 20 months old at the time, and present during the shooting. Now, Caylor is booked at the Jefferson County Jail with bail set at $100,000. Caylor had been acting as a babysitter for women with children who had no access to childcare, said St. Marie. The charges came from an investigation by the Port Townsend Police Department, who interviewed the juvenile victim and spoke with other possible victims as well. “Another witness described Mr. Caylor inappropriately touching another girl,” St. Marie said. “There are two pending possible victims besides this one.” Caylor’s attorney, Scott Charleton, said the victim’s claims “remain allegations at this point,” and that there are “significant issues regarding her (the victim’s) credibility.” Judge Keith Harper set the bail at $100,000. “These are very serious charges and very serious allegations,” Harper said. “Additional information suggests there is some corroboration and the possibility of other charges … A significant bail is appropriate because of the nature of the charges.”
