A 51-year-old Sequim man was arrested for second-degree assault after he allegedly attacked his boss with a hammer at a job site outside of Port Townsend last week.

The man’s two adult sons, who were also employees, joined in the attack on their employer, according to court documents. The men, 18 and 21, were arrested for fourth-degree assault.

Dennis B. Lentzner Jr. was arrested on the felony assault charge May 2 after sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the 500 block of Hidden Trails Road.

A man called 911 but the call was disconnected as a dispatcher heard yelling in the background.

When a dispatcher called back, a man said he was being assaulted by his workers.

Deputies later learned the man had been at a job site and was working to fix a structure that was out of plumb when an argument ensued and the employer eventually told Lentzner and his sons to leave the job site.

Lentzner’s 18-year-old son started calling the employer vulgar names and walked toward him aggressively.

When the employer asked him to stay out of it, the teen allegedly said “Lentzners stick together” and the confrontation escalated, with the 21-year-old son hitting the employer “blindsided” on the head.

The man fell back over a toolbox and hit the ground, and the three started to hit and kick him as he lie there, according to court documents.

The man told deputies he felt all three hitting him, but he was eventually able to back away, and saw the eldest Lentzner standing nearby with a hammer in his hands.

Another employee who was at the job site saw the three men confront the employer, with Lentzner hitting the man on the head with a hammer. The employee said he saw Lentzner hit the employer twice with the hammer before he was close enough to grab Lentzner’s arm to get him to stop swinging the hammer.

The man was able to separate the men, he said, then the Lentzners got into a Subaru and left.

The man who had been attacked was evaluated for a concussion by an aid crew. He had a head contusion, two swollen lips, and bruising near his left eye. An abrasion on the back of his head also matched the round head of the hammer, according to court documents.

The three men were stopped by police as they were headed home to Sequim.

The elder Lentzner allegedly admitted getting into a fight with his employer but denied hitting him with a hammer. He also said his employer had been going after his 18-year-old son with the lid to a tool box.

Lentzner later turned over the hammer that was believed to have been used in the alleged attack to a deputy.

During his arraignment Friday in Jefferson County Superior Court, Lentzner entered a pleading of “not guilty” to the felony assault charge.

His trial was set for June 27 through June 30.

Lentzner is currently being held in Jefferson County Jail; bail was set at $10,000.
