JUMP! to have fundraiser for Phase 2

Jefferson County’s first-ever all-accessible playground could receive new improvements and pieces as organizers look to fundraise for Phase 2 of the project.

JUMP! Playground, located at HJ Carroll Park in Chimacum, and its organizers will host the “May All Play” fundraiser from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 6.

Hosted at the playground, there will be music, food, and more, with playground designer Ida Ottesen of Nakano and Associates as the guest speaker.

“We’re going to have music and food and we’re selling by donation with snow cones, baked goods, and we are having raffle prizes with some great gifts,” said Sarah Grossman, president of JUMP!.

Some of those enticing raffle prizes include tickets to Seattle’s Museum of Pop Culture, gift cards to a wide range of local businesses, tickets for whale-watching tours from Puget Sound Express, and more.

Organizers of the benefit are also hosting an online raffle with even more prizes, which will go live at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 6 at go.rallyup.com/jumpplayground. Raffle gifts valued below $50 will be at the in-person raffle, while gifts above $50 will be online.

The JUMP! organizers are looking to raise $150,000 of their ambitious $600,000 goal for Phase 2 of the playground project. Some key add-ons or improvements include a play structure for kids age 2 through 5, accessible surfacing, another art gate, a shade structure for the sea snail plaza, a Rotary pavilion, and additional accessible paths for the nearby bus stop and around the park.

Phase 1 of the playground wrapped up in November 2022 after a six-year process to get it to the finish line. With a grand opening at the park, the project has found huge success in drawing in families from all around the area, supporters said.

Due to inflation impacts, the organizers were unable to fully finish JUMP! in 2022, leading to the second phase, Grossman said.

The money raised will support Jefferson County Parks and Recreation in its matching funds requirements for a Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office grant for the playground.

The new play structure is aimed at devoting a section of the playground for younger children, Grossman said.

“That will create a nice, special play area for the little kids, and it’s going to be ramped with wheelchair access,” she said.

Additionally, more slides, sensory panels, and other interactive pieces are in the plans.

The art gate for the playground will be fashioned by local sculptor Gunter Reimnitz, who also created the playground’s sea-star-themed front gate.

“Gunter is going to create an octopus gate,” Grossman said. “It’ll probably be the same dimensions and he’ll create the octopus out of metal.”
