Howard Learned Award presented

Teacher Jennifer Kruse along with teacher and coach Logan Stegner of Port Townsend High School have been awarded the first Howard Learned Award by Skillmation.

To recognize their contributions to education, school programs, and the larger community, this award will be given to a local teacher or teaching team each year. It was named in honor of local mentor Howard Learned who set the gold standard through his involvement in local schools and his compassion for the community, according to Skillmation.

With this new award, Skillmation honors a teacher’s commitment to their students and their community.

This year’s recipients, Kruse and Stegner, were selected based on nominations from other local teachers, mentors, and community members.

The two instructors have been instrumental in providing connections between community mentors and students, teaming up in the face of COVID and providing services to keep up with the demands of remote learning. They both worked overtime to make sure their students could succeed during the pandemic, according to Skillmation.

Kruse and Stegner will each be recognized for their efforts at the next Port Townsend School Board meeting Thursday, May 20.

An inaugural Howard Learned Award for Community Education Engagement certificate of appreciation will be awarded to them along with gift cards to Finistére Restaurant.
