Homes will get ‘flocked’ for Port Townsend High School’s upcoming Grad Night benefit

These birds of a feather will certainly flock together.

The 2021 Port Townsend High School Grad Night Flamingo Flocking Fundraiser is now underway.

Graduating seniors, parents and friends nominate where the flamingos will land, and they might be coming to your house or business next.

“Upon nomination graduating seniors guide the plastic flamingos to their new home. Those individuals and businesses that get ‘flocked’ can have the birds removed or relocated by making a donation to the PTHS Grad Night fund.

The lead flamingo will have a pouch around its neck for placement of recipient’s donation.

A $35 donation allows the recipient to send the flamingo flamboyance to a specific address. The evening after the flock’s arrival, the same senior students corral the flock and relocate it to another location,” explained organizers.

This year’s grad night occurs immediately after the commencement ceremony June 11. Funds raised by the flood of flamingos will be used for covering the cost of the venue, music, food, games, prizes and giveaways. The location is not disclosed in advance to keep an air of mystery. The traditional grad night celebration is alcohol- and drug-free and open to all graduating students.

Planning is underway to ensure compliance with all public health recommendations for this year’s celebration.

There has been little opportunity to do fundraising with social distancing requirements in place. More expenses have accumulated in order to cover costs of masks, sanitation and rapid tests.

“We are grateful for the help of Dr. [Tom] Locke in identifying ways that these teens can still experience this important rite of passage,” said Debbie Bakin, a parent organizer of the event.

“The goal of Grad Night 2021 is to provide our Seniors with a fantastic, positive and safe celebration following a difficult and challenging year. Please consider contributing to the cause,” she added.

Those who prefer not to be flocked but wish to donate may send contributions to: PTHS Grad Night, 2505 Cleveland St, Port Townsend, WA 98368 (include the address so organizers can add to a Do Not Flock List) or can donate directly to the PTHS Grad Night Go Fund Me at www.gofundme.com/f/safe-sober-grad-night-for-pths-seniors-2021.
