A heat wave working its way through Washington state has prompted county officials to open five cooling stations across East Jefferson.

And with hot weather forecast for the region through the week, an excessive heat advisory will remain in effect for Jefferson County through Friday, July 29, Jefferson County health officials said Monday.

Cooling centers will be available at the following locations:

The Tri-Area Community Center in Chimacum, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. TuesdayTuesday through Thursday;

Quilcene Community Center, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday;

Brinnon Visitor's Center, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday;

Port Townsend Senior Center, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday; and

The Jefferson County Library in Hadlock, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday.

COVID protocols are recommended but requirements may vary by location.

County health officials noted that temperatures will vary by location, with south county being the warmest. More moderate temperatures are expected in the Port Townsend area.

Health officials advise residents to stay out of the sun during the peak hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., if possible. People should consider canceling outdoor activities in high temperature locations.

Officials noted that there is an increased fire risk due to the high heat and low humidity, and to use caution when grilling.
