Happy to have greater awareness, respect | Letter to the editor

I don’t know if folks are aware of Rotary here in the Port Townsend area.  The three local clubs provide humanitarian services to the community with fairness, goodwill and benefit for all concerned.

Rotary in Port Townsend is part of approximately 1.2 million people in 35,000 clubs in 220 countries worldwide. They work to solve all sorts of problems including irradicating diseases. You may consider attending a meeting to get a taste if interested. One of the great things they do in each weekly meeting is to pass a hat where each person puts in a dollar and says what they are happy about.

The following is my contribution for this month that may be of benefit to all concerned:

I’m happy.

I’m happy for the many things the pandemic and the past four years has given us, for I now have more awareness of why we must protect others in order to protect ourselves.

And not to hurt others in order to keep from hurting ourselves. And I now have a deeper respect for the fragility of our democratic institutions, and why we must collectively work to preserve them.

With this awareness, we can now go on to protect the planet from the even greater pandemic of climate change, that will most certainly affect us all in the long run.
