Five more Jefferson County residents have died from COVID-19, county health officials reported Wednesday.

Jefferson County Health Officer Dr. Allison Berry said all five were fully vaccinated residents at long-term care facilities.

One person was in their 70s, two were in their 80s, and two were in their 90s.

"They were frail and unable to fully respond to their vaccines," Berry said in an email to The Leader.

"I think these deaths highlight how dangerous widespread community transmission is for those vulnerable people who cannot fully respond to their vaccines," she added.

Eleven residents of Jefferson County have succumbed to COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic. Two deaths from the disease were reported last week.

Health officials confirmed 18 new cases of the coronavirus Wednesday in Jefferson County, raising the cumulative total to 823 infections.

Eight of the new cases involved females, with the other 10 being males.

Seven cases were confirmed in Port Townsend, seven in the mid-county area, three in south county, and one on the West End.

All told, 102 residents were still in isolation Wednesday due to potential COVID-19 contact.

In Jefferson County, 54 people have been hospitalized for COVID-19.

A total of 594 people have recovered from the disease. (People are considered "recovered" at 28 days from the onset of symptoms if they are alive and not hospitalized, according to the state Department of Health.)

There have been 30,562 tests for COVID-19 in Jefferson County since the start of the pandemic, and 29,613 have resulted in negative results.
