An employee of the Safe Harbor Recovery Center in Port Townsend arrived at work to find smoke coming out of the building on the morning of Wednesday, Sept. 7.
The employee immediately called 911 and East Jefferson Fire Rescue responded and found smoke coming from under the eaves as well as a side door.
“It was just happenstance that someone caught it early,” said Fire Chief Bret Black.
The fire was extinguished not long after at around 7:15 a.m.
“Most of the damage was due to smoke,” Black said.
“We didn’t use a ton of water,” he added.
The cause of the fire is under investigation and no injuries were reported.
“It’s scary to have a fire in your workplace,” Black said noting that there are many appliances in any office that create heat and could start a fire.
