Featured chamber music ‘From the Wars’ and ‘The Final Romantics’

The Olympic Music Festival is set to host six distinguished musicians for a weekend of “Chamber Music Masterworks” on Saturday, Aug. 31, and Sunday, Sept. 1, at Fort Worden State Park’s Wheeler Theater.

Programs for the 2 p.m. concerts will be “The Final Romantics” Aug. 31, featuring music by Brahms, Strauss and Dvōřak, followed by “From the Wars” Sept. 1, featuring the composers Clarke, Elgar and Shostakovich.

Pianist and Olympic Music Festival artistic director Julio Elizalde will welcome Seattle Symphony cellist Efe Baltacıgil, Juilliard piano professor Robert McDonald, violist and Miro Quartet member John Largess, violinist and Avery Fisher Career Grant recipient Alexi Kenney, and violinist Scott St John, who’s also a concertmaster and artistic partner of Houston’s River Oaks Chamber Orchestra.

Scheduled musical selections for The Final Romantics include Brahms’ Six Piano Pieces, Op. 118, Strauss’ Violin Sonata in E-flat major, Op. 18, and Dvořák’s Piano Quartet No. 2 in E-flat major, Op. 87.

Musical selections for “From the Wars” are set to include Clarke’s “Dumka for Violin, Viola and Piano” from 1940, Shostakovich’s Cello Sonata in D minor, Op. 40, and Elgar’s Piano Quintet in A minor, Op. 84.
