Fan-favorite classical pianist returns for Candlelight Concerts

Posted

Trinity United Methodist’s Candlelight Concerts are featuring yet another return by classical pianist Lino Rivera, who promises to offer “Light and Love” through his musical program.

Born in the Philippines, Rivera has performed as a solo recitalist, concerto soloist, chamber musician and accompanist on three continents, and he’s made it his mission to promote contemporary works, piano transcriptions and obscure solo piano compositions.

Rivera’s program on Thursday, June 26, will feature Bach’s Chaconne in D minor for solo violin, transcribed for the piano by Brahms, and Tchaikovsky’s “Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture” for an orchestra, transcribed for the piano by the Russian pianist Vyacheslav Gryaznov.

The program will also feature the Washington state premiere of California pianist and composer Richard Cionco’s “Lux Aeterna” from 2024, whose origins tie into the Catholic Mass, even as it offers “a broader secular message,” in which our world holds forces for both good and evil, which is reflected in its juxtaposition, and eventual resolution, of emotionally opposing themes.

What to know:

Rivera will be performing at Trinity United Methodist Church at 7 p.m. on June 26 for one set, with no intermission. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Admission to the concert is by suggested donation, with half going to  Rivera’s chosen charity, Habitat for Humanity of East Jefferson County.

Attendees should plan on arriving early, and doors open at 6:30 p.m. Masks are encouraged.
