The East Jefferson Rivals earned a fifth-place finish at the 16-team Island Invitational at Bainbridge Island High School on Jan. 13. East Jefferson entered 17 boys and eight girls in the full-day tournament, which was held on four mats.
“We had 11 scorers on the boys’ side, which was the largest group of kids we have entered in a tournament this season,” said coach Karl Jordan. “It was great for our hard-working athletes to have a chance to showcase their skills this weekend.”
Eight boys earned medals on the day, including three finalists: Grady White earned his second championship of the season, winning at 157 pounds; Manaseh Ramirez battled in his third finals of the season, earning second place at 150 pounds; and Silas Klontz wrestled in the finals for his first time of the year, earning second place at 190 pounds.
Other medal earners included Rylen Kruse, who took third place at 175 pounds, Ethan Perovich with a fifth place finish at 175 pounds, Levi Donahue with a fifth place finish at 190 pounds, Mason Iverson with a fifth place finish at 215 pounds and Aidan Powell with a fourth place finish at heavyweight.
“This was our fourth weekend tournament in four weeks,” said coach Jim Wilcox. “Some of these kids have already wrestled 30 matches with a month to go before post-season.”
Wilcox added that a few of the athletes were “starting to show in competition what they have shown all year in our room, especially Silas Klontz, Mason Iverson and Aidan Powell today.”
On the girls’ side, a round-robin tournament was grouped, which included two East Jefferson girls going undefeated on the day, Savvy Grimm at 105 pounds and Gracee Liskee at 120 pounds.
