On Thursday Oct. 10, both East Jefferson (EJ) cross country teams traveled to Rainier to compete in the Rainier Invitational. The 5k race course included trail, gravel, concrete, grass, and dirt and was reported by athletes to be “horrible.” The event hosted seventeen HS teams and fourteen middle school teams but unfortunately provided only four portable toilets, leading to long lines and desperate athletes.
The Rivals arrived with a time crunch due to traffic issues, leaving the boys with abbreviated warm up time. Despite the handicap, the boys team won the event with a score of 59 over second place Tenino’s 96.
Sophomore Joshua Yearian led his team, placing third overall in the field of 140 athletes with a time of 17:12. Fellow sophomores Noah Isenberg and Nico Errichetti placed 6th and 10th respectively with times of 17:47 and 18:10. The scoring five was rounded out by junior Dustin Hines (11th, 18:27) and sophomore Atom Barrett (30th, 19:41).
The girls race had 56 participants, but only six complete teams. EJ only had four girls compete so did not have enough to score as a team. Junior Leah Ferland was the first Rival to finish, taking 6th place in a personal record (PR) time of 21:35. She was followed by junior Michael Gregg (12th, 22:53) and sophomores Clara Camp (26th, 25:36) and Kaida Rodrigues (41st, PR 28:22).
The cross country teams will next travel to Lincoln Park in Fauntleroy to compete in their third Nisqually League meet on Monday Oct. 21.
Alice Fraser is the head cross country coach and assistant track and field coach for the East Jefferson Rivals.
