EJ girls narrowly lose at home, winless hoops season continues

The Rivals girls almost prevailed but ended up losing their game against Seattle Christian School 24-20 on Friday.

Although the EJ girls remained competitive with Seattle Christian, especially in the first half, it wasn’t enough to earn their first win of the season.

The first quarter attested to the strengths of both teams’ defenses. The Rivals couldn’t convert most of their looks on offense, but their defensive unit looked stellar by holding the Warriors to only four points at the end of the first period. The only caveat was that EJ was limited to a single point as the first ended with a score of 4-1 in favor of the away team.

The second period was more of the same as the Rivals held Seattle Christian at bay, but only managed five points in the period.

At halftime the score was 10-6 with the opponents narrowly ahead.

Freshman Kay Botkin scored the Rivals’ only points of the third, with a clean three-point shot. The score was 14-9 as EJ hoped to ramp up their offensive performance to turn things around. Although the girls scored 11 points in the last quarter, more than they’d managed in three periods, it wasn’t enough to beat Seattle Christian.

The score was 24-20 in favor of the away team at the final whistle.

Junior Madison Harris led EJ in scoring with seven points. She was followed by Alyssa Vandenberg with six points, Aurin Asbell with four points, and Botkin with three.

The Rivals girls have yet to win in the 2021-2022 season, with a current record of 0-5. The girls’ next match isn’t until Jan. 4 against Charles Wright Academy, giving them time to regroup over the holiday break.
