Team speed and a crushing full-court press proved to be the undoing for the Quilcene Rangers last week in boys varsity basketball against Evergreen Lutheran.
The Eagles outpaced the Rangers 53-34 in a contest that started a lot closer than the final score indicated.
While the two teams played tight in the first quarter — with the score noted at four-all with a little more than five minutes to play — the Eagles took flight with a six-point run to lead 10-4 with two minutes left.
Up by four at the start of the second quarter, Evergreen Lutheran continued to put the Rangers in the rear-view mirror and led by eight points at halftime. The Eagles jumped to a double-digit advantage by 3:30 in the third as turnovers continued to trouble the Rangers.
The Eagles led by 18 with two minutes left in the contest, and a three-pointer from the Evergreen Lutheran bench at the buzzer made the final score even more lopsided.
The loss was the second last week for the Rangers, who opened the season with a 48-44 decision that left Tacoma Baptist on top.
