Dreams of the Forty Whales of the Harmonic Reed System

Posted by Largent

Join us for a site-specific performance of Joey Largent's most recent composition, Dreams of the Forty Whales of the Harmonic Reed System: a 90-minute, meditative sound bath for four shruti boxes retuned into the microtonal system of just intonation in collaboration with movement artist Katrina Wolfe, who will dance subtly along with the gradually unfolding piece in her hand-stitched costume. The performance will occur at a secret location inside of a reverberant bunker at Fort Worden under nothing but candelight. RSVP directly for a map and more information. Performed by Largent's ensemble, Glacial Time Communion.

Glacial Time Communion is:

Tae Kim - 17-limit shruti box, voice
Sasha Leon - 7-limit shruti box, voice
Katrina Wolfe - dance, handmade costumes, voice
Joey Largent - 7-limit harmonium, voice, composition

Joey Largent is a composer, performance artist, and writer based between Seattle and Port Townsend. His primary practice is developing long-duration compositions for acoustic instruments in just intonation, performing improvised music for dance, and developing works to be performed in remote locations in nature. His work has been released on L.A.-based label Dragon's Eye Recordings, and has been performed recently by San Francisco's Del Sol Quartet in the 17th Venice Architecture Biennale. Amongst others, he has studied composition, just intonation, and Indian Classical khyal gayaki with Rose Okada and minimalist pioneers Michael Harrison and La Monte Young.

Katrina Wolfe’s primary work is the practice, teaching, and performance of Motion Awareness (Ma): a movement technique that Katrina has developed by integrating her experience in Butoh (experimental dance founded in 1950s Japan) with foundational aspects of Vipassana Meditation (as taught by S.N. Goenka in the tradition of Sayagyi U Ba Khin) which she practices daily. Motion Awareness also draws on Katrina’s lifelong work in visual arts, especially figurative sculpture and anatomy, as well her study of Iyengar yoga. Her work seeks to offer both viewer and practitioner increased awareness of the universality of impermanence, resulting in the cultivation of intention, empathy, and compassion in all aspects of life.
