The two-time Grammy-nominated Dover Quartet chamber ensemble has been deemed “one of the greatest quartets of the last 100 years” by BBC Music Magazine, and Centrum audiences will have three opportunities to catch them in action this upcoming weekend.
The Dover Quartet is the Penelope P. Watkins Ensemble in Residence at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, and holds additional residencies at the Bienen School of Music at Northwestern University in Illinois, and the Walton Arts Center’s Artosphere festival in Arkansas.
The group consists of first violinist Joel Link, second violinist Bryan Lee, violist Julianne Lee and cellist Camden Shaw, and its awards include a sweep of all prizes at the 2013 Banff International String Quartet Competition in Alberta, Canada, grand and first prizes at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, and prizes at the Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition.
Its honors include the Avery Fisher Career Grant, Chamber Music America’s Cleveland Quartet Award and the Lincoln Center’s Hunt Family Award.
On Sunday, June 1, at 2 p.m. in the Wheeler Theater at Fort Worden State Park, attendees can catch the Dover Quartet’s program of Leoš Janáček’s Quartet No. 1 (“Kreutzer Sonata”), Antonín Dvořák’s Quartet in F major, Op. 96 (“American”) and Robert Schumann’s Piano Quintet in E-flat major, Op. 44.
“The participants are playing the two evenings before the concert,” said Gwen Franz, program manager of jazz, chamber music and choro for Centrum. “The Amnis Piano quartet on May 31 should be outstanding.”
The Amnis Piano Quartet is a New Haven-based ensemble, consisting of violinist Minkyung Lee, violist Matthew McDowell, cellist Jenny Bahk and pianist Linda Lee.
They won prizes in the 50th annual Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, the Premio Renzo Giubergia Competition, the Yellow Springs Chamber Music Competition, the Oneppo Series Competition and the Yale Chamber Music Society Competition.
They were also finalists in the recent Coltman competition, and semi-finalists in the 2024 Concert Artists Guild Competition.
