June was the third month of club play and competitions for Discovery Bay Women’s Golf Club and Camas Prairie Women’s Golf Club of Port Townsend. June was also a time to honor graduates from our two local high schools in Chimacum and Port Townsend.
The Discovery Bay Women’s Club announced their selection of Maykayla Vadenberg as the recipient of their $1,500 scholarship. As president of the newly formed Health Services Club, Vadenberg was selected as the only student to participate in the Job Shadow program at Jefferson Healthcare. She plans to attend Olympic College in the fall where her goal is to receive a degree as a Registered Nurse.
From Port Townsend High School, the Women’s Club of Port Townsend, also announced Sarah Wells as the first recipient of the Female Athlete Scholarship award and $1,000. Sarah was on the varsity swim team for two years and the golf team for three years. She has taken AP classes in her junior year and participated in the Running Start program at Olympic College. She also has volunteered in nonprofit organizations and played a leadership role in the Associated Student Body.
Wells’ goal is to earn a BA degree in Global Business from the University of South Florida.
This represents an important shift from competition to recognition of two of the outstanding graduates from both schools.
For many years the women of Discovery Bay Golf Club have presented a cash scholarship to an outstanding female athlete at Chimacum High School. This year the Port Townsend Women’s Golf Club presented their first Female Athlete Scholarship award to a graduate of Port Townsend High School.
Working with both the Friends of Chimacum and the counselors and athletic coaches of both schools, a slate of candidates is chosen from which the athletic scholarship recipients are selected. Committees of golf club members make the final selection of the two women to be awarded the scholarships. Criteria for these awards include participation in an intramural sport, demonstration of leadership, academic excellence, and contributions to the community through service work.
Congratulations are due the women of both local golf clubs for their recognition of outstanding performances from our high school graduates in academics, community service and the wonderful and rewarding participation in sports.
Barb Aldrich is in charge of commucations for Discovery Bay Women’s Golf Club and Camas Prairie Women’s Golf Club.
