Disco Bay women golfers play for scholarships

Sept. 6 saw the Discovery Bay Women’s Golf Club hold their second annual Scholarship Fundraiser Tournament, in which 31 women (and men) showed up on what club spokeswoman Dee Sweeney called “a beautiful Friday morning” to compete and determine who would also become this year’s champions at the putting contest and KPs (closest to the pin on the par-three holes).

The tournament was followed by a silent auction, raffles and a potluck dinner provided by the Discovery Bay Women’s Golf Club.

The format for the tournament was a two-person team scramble, whereby each player hits the ball and the next shot is played from the best location of the two balls played.

The winning teams for the first flight were:

• First-place low gross: Greg Miller and Wanda Synnestvedt, who collectively shot a gross 70.

• Second-place low gross: Tim Durner and George Cave, with a gross 71.

• First-place low net: Jane and Will Peoples, with a net 56.8.

• Second-place low net: Witta Priester, Linda Case and Sheila Kilmer, with a net 57.

The winning teams for the second flight were:

• First-place low gross: Barb Aldrich and Dave Beuter, with a gross 79.

• Second-place low gross: Patrick and Greg Rutz, with a gross 80.

• First-place low net: Jim and Linda Deforest, with 58.

• Second-place low net: Ron and Larry Germeau, with 59.6.

KP winners were Barb Aldrich and Dave Beuter, on hole 14, and Sheila Kilmer and Greg Rutz, on hole 3, with the putting contest won by Andy McCullem and Doug Lewis.

To add to the day’s excitement, Jane Peoples shot an “Eagle” (two strokes under par) on hole 2, which is a par-four.

“Her drive landed near the green, and then she chipped it into the hole!” Sweeney said.

Sweeney thanked Will and Jane Peoples, who helped organize the tournament and donated the prize money for the winners.

“The proceeds from the tournament will be awarded as a scholarship to a qualifying female athlete at Chimacum High School,” Sweeney said.

And the day before, on Sept. 5, the Discovery Bay Women’s 18-Hole Club played “Predict Your Score” in which the winner was Jane Peoples, who predicted her exact score of 82.

Second place was a tie — Terry Graham predicted her score to be 88, and shot 87, while Sheila Kilmer predicted she’d shoot 96, and got a 95.

Third place went to Starla Audette, who predicted a score of 100, but shot a 98.

On Sept. 12, the Discovery Bay Women’s 18-Hole Golf Club played a round where only the scores on the par-fours counted, minus half the handicap.

The winner was Jane Peoples, with a net 40.5 for the 10 par-four holes played, and second was Dee Sweeney, with a net 44.5. Third place went to Marianne Ott, who shot a net 47.5.

And on Sept. 19, the Disco Bay women played an individual “best ball” competition.

The winners were Peoples in first place again, with a net score of 31 for nine holes, followed by Wanda Synnestvedt in second place, with a net score of 34.

Third place was a tie between Terry Graham and Jane Guiltinan, who both shot a net 34.5.
