Deadline nears for PT Symphony Orchestra’s Young Artist Competition

Posted

The deadline is fast approaching to participate in the Port Townsend Symphony Orchestra’s Young Artist Competition.

This season’s Young Artist Competition takes place on Saturday, March 29, at Grace Lutheran Church in Port Townsend and the deadline for application is March 14.

Pamela Roberts, coordinator of the Young Artist Competition, touted the annual event as providing performance opportunities, recognition and awards for young musicians, who will be placed in junior and senior divisions based on their ages.

“We are excited to host our sixth annual competition for young musicians,” Roberts said. “Past participation has been strong, and we expect to see another successful competition in 2025.”

The PTSO Young Artist Competition is held free of charge for participants and is open to young musicians, 4-22, who play strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion or piano. They must reside in Jefferson County and can not have won first prize in the senior division the previous year.

Cash awards range from $50 to $500. Any of the winners may be invited to perform as a featured soloist with the Port Townsend Symphony Orchestra during its 2025-2026 season.

Roberts noted that young musicians will receive expert feedback from judges, meet fellow musicians, and have the chance to earn recognition through awards and public visibility.

“Adults in the community who coach young musicians, can make a positive difference by encouraging youth to participate,” Roberts said.
