Teddy Bear Hike in Cappy’s Woods and Trails. 10 a.m. Meet in Port Townsend, at the south end of Willamette Street, where it ends at an access point to Cappy’s Trails. The 16th Annual Teddy Bear Hike will be led by Fred Weinmann and will welcome its hikers to the New Year by walking through the wilderness within the Quimper wildlife corridor. First Day Hikes at Fort Worden. 1-3 p.m. Meet at USO Building parking lot, next to Taps at the Guardhouse, near the main entrance of Fort Worden State Park, which is co-hosting a choice of three guided hikes and one self-guided hike with the Friends of Fort Worden. The self-guided hike will be along family-friendly roads winding up and around Artillery Hill, with docents providing information at several stations along the way. A Fort Worden Park ranger will lead a history hike, while another park ranger will guide a hike about habitat in urban areas. The third guided hike will be to Fort Worden’s major viewpoints. The hike trails have moderate slopes, and the expected duration of all the hikes is about two hours at an easy pace. Free warm beverages and light snacks provided at the starting point. Visitors are encouraged to bring water and wear weather-appropriate attire and footwear.

Rotary Club of East Jefferson County: Walking the Camino de Santiago Trail in Spain. Noon-1 p.m. Old Alcohol Plant Restaurant, 310 Hadlock Bay Road, Port Hadlock. Rotary Club member T.J. Plastow and her daughter, Rian, will recount the 44 days and 520 miles they walked on the Camino de Santiago, one of the world’s great walks. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Camino is a network of pilgrims’ ways leading to the shrine of the apostle Saint James the Great, in the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, in northwestern Spain. Many follow its routes as a form of spiritual path, or retreat for their spiritual growth. It is also popular with hiking and cycling enthusiasts, and organized tour groups. The Plastows spent a year studying the trail before traversing it on foot from the late summer through the early autumn of 2019. They will discuss their preparations, the trail itself, where they stayed and and the people they met along the way. An optional cafeteria-style lunch of soup, salad and sandwich is available starting at 11:30 a.m. Guests are welcome.
