Cessna flips after landing in Port Townsend

Posted

A small airplane nosed-over on the runway at the Jefferson County International Airport Monday afternoon. The two occupants were not hurt.

The Cessna 185 was landing to the west when it bounced once and then flipped over the nose, one observer said. He also noted that the wind was shifting between blowing down the runway and across it, which makes landing more difficult.

When the aircraft stopped moving, it was flipped onto its back, with the nose facing the way it had came.

The runway recently underwent resurfacing and the taxiway was moved about 500 feet to the west.

As of 3:30 p.m. June 13, the aircraft was still on the runway, but emergency services have left the airport.

Cessna 185s are fixed-wing, single-engine tailwheel aircraft which can be manufactured with four or six seats.

The airplane is registered to Kirk LeDoux of Stanwood. The two aboard were a man and his young daughter.

Jefferson County Sheriff Joe Nole said police received word of the incident at about 1:30 p.m. Monday.

Skies were sunny and clear at the time of the crash.

Leader reporter Luciano Marano contributed to this report.
