Come hear the music play.
Vin Voleur brings the romance of cabaret live to the stage today with classic European and English-language songs made famous by Edith Piaf, Marlene Dietrich, and other singers of the early 20th century.
They’ll bring the character of that era to Finnriver Farm & Cidery at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, March 18.
This performance features internationally acclaimed cellist & composer Lori Goldston, who is most famous for being Nirvana’s touring cellist and featured on “MTV Unplugged.” Sylvia Wiedemann joins on accordion with Joy Von Spain’s timelessly styled vocals.
“Joy really brings the character and feel of the 1940s to the stage,” Goldston said.
Hearing her croon to the romantic tunes takes their audiences out of their seats and into Parisian streets.
“A lot of people say when they close their eyes they feel like they’re in Europe in a little French cafe,” Wiedemann said.
All three play in bands with a variety of other styles ranging from rock to metal to electronic, but bonded over record listening sessions to the nightclub noise.
While they have worked on a number of original songs, the performance aspect of those is still in progress, so they stick to covers in their live shows.
“While I’m not going to be dancing around like Liza Minnelli unfortunately — although that would be interesting — we definitely bring the listener into that other vibe, the time when we had smoky basement clubs and exposed brick and people getting very, very dressed up to go and sit and drink and listen to live music,” Von Spain said.
Speaking of drinking, the name Vin Voleur is French for “wine thief.”
“I work in the wine industry,” Wiedemann said. “And when you think of Old European music, especially in the ‘40s, everybody is having wine. It goes along with music, song, and dance, you know?”
Finnriver Farm & Cidery is located at 124 Center Road in Chimacum and there is a $5 cover charge collected 30 minutes before music starts.
