A 53-year-old Brinnon woman is facing charges of second-degree negligent driving after she allegedly fell asleep at the wheel and collided with another car just before 5 p.m. Friday on U.S. Highway 101 near Mount Walker.
The other driver, a 73-year-old Sequim man, was injured in the two-car crash and was taken to Jefferson Healthcare in Port Townsend for medical care.
The Brinnon woman was not hurt, according to the Washington State Patrol.
The State Patrol said the Brinnon woman was driving on U.S. 101 south and approaching Milepost 298 when she fell asleep and her 2013 Mercedes crossed the center line and hit a 2001 Mercury Sable that was going north.
The Mercury then rolled over while the Mercedes went into the ditch, according to the State Patrol.
Both vehicles were totaled and were towed from the crash site by All City Autobody & Towing.
Design firm chosen for Olympic Trail project
Otak, Inc. of Redmond has been awarded a contract to provide engineering services for the construction of the segment of the Olympic Discovery Trail between the Larry Scott Trail and Anderson Lake State Park.
The trail extension is expected to cost approximately $5.2 million. Most of the cost is being covered by grants and federal funding. The county has a $3.6 million grant from the Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office; a $200,000 transfer from another state grant; and
$1.4 million in expected revenues from the American Rescue Plan.
Under the agreement with Otak, the firm will be paid no more than $644,535 for professional engineering and environmental services to design and permit the three mile stretch of the trail from the south end of the Larry Scott Trail at Milo Curry Road to Anderson Lake State Park. The trail will run parallel to Four Corners Road, with a signalized trail crossing at the intersection of Highway 20-Four Corners Road.
The construction cost of the segment has been estimated at $4 million.
Design work is expected to take 18 months, with the project going out for construction bids in spring 2023.
County commissioners approved the Otak agreement at their meeting Monday, Jan. 24.
