Qualifications sought for Community Center Gym roof replacement

Jefferson County has issued a request for qualifications for architectural and engineering services to replace the roof of the Port Townsend Community Center Gym at 620 Tyler St.

In 2011 a structural evaluation by Terrapin Architecture and Owen Structural Engineering revealed structural deficiencies in the gym’s roof trusses.

Although the trusses currently have the capacity to carry the weight of the roof and themselves, the report indicated they cannot carry any snow load, or a moderately extreme wind load.

The report further warns the roof’s structural components have an undetermined life expectancy.

Consultants will be expected to prepare first a preliminary design report, to analyze corrective alternatives that will meet the city of Port Townsend’s building code, then plans, specifications and estimates, in addition to potentially providing construction support services.

The consultant will complete a project schedule within 10 days after a notice to proceed.

For further details, contact the Jefferson County Department of Central Services.

County approves 1% levy collection increase for all three funds

All three Jefferson County commissioners approved a 1% levy collection increase for the county’s general, road and conservation futures funds.

Those increases will allow the county to collect an additional $91,000 for its general fund, $50,800 for its roads fund and $2,700 for its conservation futures fund.

Port Townsend has also approved a 1% collection increase.

The Port Townsend City Council unanimously voted to approve a 1% tax collection increase for the general levy and the library levy.

These increases will bring the general fund about $26,000 of additional revenue, and the library fund an additional $12,190.

Property owners in Jefferson County can look up their property’s assessed value through the county assessor and treasurer property search tool. Once the address is input, individuals can look at property tax trends for their location over the years.
