Gallery 9’s featured artists for May are jeweler Roberto Costa Ribeiro and oil Painter Janice Pastor.
Ribeiro devotes his winters in Port Townsend to producing his jewelry, ranging from earrings and rings to bracelets, necklaces and pendants of all sizes, both “flashy and rustic,” and all “polished to perfection,” according to Katy Morse of Gallery 9.
Ribeiro has been making jewelry for nearly 30 years, and it’s his primary source of income.
He learned the basics of silversmithing from a friend in Brazil, where he was born and raised. Ribeiro has since developed his own style and techniques, but he still believes in learning by experimentation, and crafts each clasp, hoop, post and bezel individually.
Pastor paints in a representational style, with a flair for expressionism, and Gallery 9 will be showcasing some of her newest work, featuring flowers in what Morse described as “stunning color and light.”
“As an artist, I find that the expression of my lifestyle in the Pacific Northwest is brought through in my extension of brush to canvas,” Pastor said. “The choice to live my life in such a natural setting brings strength, balance and a warm sense of fluidity to my work.”
Pastor credits her upbringing in a small Ohio town with familiarizing her “with the colors and textures of the countryside, that have inspired her style of art to this day.”
As a military wife who moved across the country, Pastor was exposed not only to different materials and techniques of painting but also a number of educational opportunities, such as studying under John Heath in Marquette, Michigan, and attending courses at the Parson School of Design in New York City.
“Most artwork shows the artist’s vulnerability,” Pastor said. “The challenge for me is how to use these areas of doubt as a stepping stone for my future work.”
Pastor seeks to escape any comfort zone she might develop by depicting a variety of different subjects through equally diverse styles — including abstract and impressionism — and media, since she believes this allows her “to express different ideas.”
Pastor teaches art classes from her own studio, which has allowed her to focus more fully on her work.
“There is no greater joy for me than ending a day with a good painting session,” Pastor said. “My art is an expression of my inner self, an outward interpretation of both my inner world and my perception of the outer world. I am an artist because I need to be one.”
Gallery 9 is located at 1012 Water St. in Port Townsend.
