On Jan. 20, Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th president of our country. As anticipated, there has been a flurry of executive orders and legislative actions that may impact hospitals and clinics like those at Jefferson Healthcare, and we expect more will come.

We are bracing for decreased funding for and increased barriers to Medicaid — the public insurance plan for those who face the greatest economic and resource constraints — heightened focus on reproductive care services, and increased scrutiny and attention on immigration status.

These risks are real, and we know many are feeling anxious about the potential impacts.

However, I want to reassure our community that Jefferson Healthcare is, and always will be, a place of healing for everyone regardless of who you are or why you need care. Given recent federal changes, we are taking steps to comply and provide increased protections for all our patients, especially immigrant community members, to ensure everyone can receive the care they need. We are working to designate safe and private spaces and support our frontline staff in how to legally and appropriately respond to immigration enforcement threats, should they arise.

Jefferson Healthcare is committed to this community. This was and continues to be the shining legacy of Vic Dirksen [former administrator of Jefferson Healthcare] and one that our entire organization is proud to uphold.

To do so, we will continue to provide access to comprehensive reproductive health-care services. We will continue to work with partners to ensure our systems of care are offered in a respectful and dignified manner. We will continue to expand services for behavioral health, substance use disorder and dental care because a lack of these services most often impacts those with the greatest need and fewest resources, and those whose voices have been historically silenced. We will continue to offer generous financial support, including reduced-price and even free care for those whose needs and circumstances dictate. And we will continue to care for and protect all members of our community.

To those worried about accessing health-care services at Jefferson Healthcare, it is our responsibility to take care of you. More importantly, it is our greatest honor. We are a strong, locally owned and governed organization and will quietly yet steadfastly navigate the changing political landscape while continuing to meet our community’s needs.

This is who we are because this is who you are. Your values are our values. Nothing has changed at Jefferson Healthcare. Of that you can be certain.

Mike Glenn has been CEO of Jefferson Healthcare since 2010, when he took over for Vic Dirksen after a national search.
