Port Hadlock’s Ajax Cafe has won the Mary P. Johnson Award for the eatery’s Galster House renovation project.
The Jefferson County Historical Society, responsible for handing out the award, chooses one project each year to allot the accolade based on the protection, restoration, documentation, preservation, and promotion of regional architecture and cultural heritage of east Jefferson County.
The Galster House was constructed in 1890 and originally built to be the home of Samuel Hadlock, the namesake for Port Hadlock. Over the years, the historic building has been a family home, saloon, cafe, and general hub of community.
The structure was in great need of repair and TLC and has received that much-needed love to remain a mainstay of the Port Hadlock community.
The renovation project and all other candidates for the Mary P. Johnson Award will be celebrated at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17 at the Ajax Cafe.
All are invited to attend, and interested parties can learn more about the celebration by emailing programs@jchsmuseum.com.
