Representatives of the city of Port Townsend and Regimental Tree Care examine the landmark tree at Gateway Park after a part of the tree’s trunk broke off the morning of Wednesday, July 28.
City Public Works Director Steve King said the area was taped off for safety and the city was bringing in an arborist to see if the tree can be salvaged.
“We are going to stabilize the tree with some pruning and temporary strapping to reduce the risk of further tree failure, particularly over the roadway,” King said. “After we stabilize the tree, we will determine if the tree can be saved.”
