A 10-year-old girl was killed Monday afternoon as she stood with another girl on a pullout next to U.S. Highway 101 and they were struck by a driver who went off the road north of Queets.

The other girl, 12, was injured and was taken by a medical transport helicopter to Mary Bridge Children's Hospital in Tacoma.

The pair were standing in a grassy area of a pullout next to US 101 when a 67-year-old Lake Stevens man who was driving north on the highway had a medical emergency and lost consciousness, according to the Washington State Patrol.

The man's 2003 Toyota then drifted off the roadway, went into an irrigation ditch, then came out of the ditch and hit the girls.

The Toyota kept going and eventually came to a stop in the ditch.

Both girls were residents of Queets, according to the State Patrol.

Authorities did not identify the two girls.

The driver was not hurt but was taken to a nearby community hospital as a precaution.

Charges are pending, according to the State Patrol.

The crash occurred near Milepost 153 on US 101 just after 1 p.m. July 19. Traffic was delayed by approximately six hours Monday afternoon.
