The county responded to my concerns with this: "All mixed plastics contribute 3.5% of the total material mix by weight so by excluding perhaps half of the plastic stream we are retaining 98.25% of the materials in our current mix. "

Notice: "HALF of the plastic stream" that is now being collected for recycling will not be recycled as of April 1.

Yes, we do need to find other ways to both reduce the amount of plastic that we use AND find a way to dispose of it in a way that doesn't end up as microplastics in the environment. That is a huge challenge, and all innovative ways to do that should be evaluated.

For starters, complain to Costco corporate about the amount of packaging that they use. Using a plastic clamshell for 8 apples? Or for 18 eggs?? Really???
